For a company, adopting BIM should be seen primarily as an opportunity to improve and innovate its own internal processes: its adoption is essential to remaining competitive in the marketplace and safeguarding the company’s assets.
In the planning phase, BIM can anticipate unexpected problems which may arise during construction, thanks to the availability of a digital model of the structure which contains all the information required to manage time- and cost-critical resources. During construction, the availability of the BIM model facilitates control of and coordination between the various construction processes and allows the user to view the progress of the project and check that it is on schedule. The models can also be brought into the construction site by using applications to improve communication with contractors and workers and optimize/speed up certain operations during the construction phase.
This is why Fraunhofer Italia supports companies in implementing this change with R&D efforts which maximize the resources available to the company and minimize waste.
Fraunhofer Italia’s research efforts are focused on:
- The development, prototyping and implementation of software applications to support the automated integration of real world data (provided by sensors) with BIM models, for example in measuring the structure in its existing form;
- The development, prototyping and implementation of software applications to support the integration of BIM models with established management methods like Lean Construction;
- The promotion of collaborative processes supported by software solutions and applications to facilitate communication between the various players in the process.
